Hydrogeological aproaches as the tool for the mitigation of negative impact of climate change in water management: Evaluation of qualitative and quantitative aspects of managed aquifer recharge

The thesis adresses the issue of efficient use of groundwater resources under the ongoing climate change conditions, which results in reduced natural recharge of aquifers. It focuses on the assessment of qualitative and quantitative aspects of managed groundwater recharge. In addition to a review of the issues of artificial recharge, the thesis provides two outputs. The first one is a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of artificial infiltration in crystalline conditions, typical for a large part of the Czech Republic, where at present artificial infiltration is not a commonly applied procedure. The second key output is the monitoring of the occurrence of new types of micropollutants from the category of so-called emerging pollutants, which may limit the availability of drinking water sources, especially in periods of climatic stress. Research within the PhD project was conducted at several pilot sites and the results are published in peer-reviewed articles. The obtained findings confirm the suitability of the managed groundwater recharge procedure and the considerable effectiveness of attenuation processes of the aquifers in degrading micropollutant pollution.
Natural sources of drinken water in Prague

Data were obtained based on interviews, interrogating the specialists on this subjects and from the research publications. Results: Comparison of main differencies of water supply objects in Prague which provide drinking water for its population. Data about the sources, its history and ability of stocking the water, followed by its refinement and transport to the capital. For better accuracy, results are listed in tables, followed by evaluation of their major differencies. Conclusion: Comprehensive summary of gained data, outline for possible extension to Diploma Theis, final evaluation. Managed artificial recharge as a tool to eliminate negative impacts of climate change.

: The topic of artificial recharge technology for water supply into the underground, its direct use and application in the field is becoming a more frequent foreign question, but also in the Czech Republic. This is due to the negative trend in groundwater levels over the past 10 years, caused by drought and temperature regression trends. The theoretical part of this thesis presents the knowledge of the use of artificial groundwater recharge, even with specific cases in the world or in the Czech Republic. This work is especially focused on a very specific case of the construction that represent underground dam in the village of Meziboří in the environment of the Czech massif "hard rocks". Specifically, its efficiency and impact on natural groundwater runoff. For this purpose, a numerical model was developed in the program Groundwater Vistas (extension for MODFLOW). From the results we can observe the influence of natural groundwater regime in both static and dynamic model. After simulating the dam in a steady- state regime of unaffected conditions, the groundwater level in the model before the dam increased significantly above ground level. The possible pumping without drying the collector then represents values 5,4 - 5,8 m3 /day (0,063 - 0,067 l/s) from the well just before the dam. The drain...
Artificial recharge of groundwater resources

This thesis addresses artificial replenishment of groundwater resources, commonly known as artificial recharge. The idea of artificial replenishment of groundwater lies in man-induced transfer of surface water to underground aquifers. The introduction highlights the reasons that led humans to artificially replenish groundwater. In addition, individual methods of surface, subsurface and induced infiltration are described. A special chapter was devoted to natural factors limiting the use of these methods. The thesis also includes studies of three concrete examples of projects of artificial recharge into groundwater by various techniques, each time with a different intention. Specifically, it describes resisting the intrusion of salt water into the Delta Llobregat aquifer in Spain, using the appropriate geological structure as a reservoir of potable water for the drought in South Florida, and the use of artificial infiltration basins and bank infiltration for water use in Káraný, Czech Republic.
Artificial recharge of watewater in small catchments

The main objective of the thesis is to study artificial wastewater recharge in the area of Řevničov and reassessment of related problems such as groundwater chemical changes, colmatage, and unfavorable legislation in the Czech Republic. Individual chapters describe the experience with the above mentioned topic in the Czech Republic, but classifies it into the global context. The major part of the thesis focuses on the assessment of the qualitative and quantitative impacts of wastewater artificial recharge in the geological environment. These conclusions are drawn from monitoring changes of groundwater quality, which are controlled on the network of monitoring boreholes in the Řevničov experimental catchment. The natural attenuation of geological environment has considerable impact to final composition of contaminated water, which is compared to legal limits of underground and potable water in Czech Republic. In the research area several tracing tests were also applied, with the aim of proving the expected flow of wastewater into monitoring borehole.
